The Palestinian Authority’s Information Ministry sent a letter to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) complaining about the preliminary Israeli Knesset proposal, which passed the first reading, forbidding journalists, and ordinary residents, from filming and documenting Israeli invasions and military activities in occupied Palestine.
The new bill passed the first reading in a 45-42 vote and aims at outlawing filming the soldiers with what is described as “the intent to demoralize them, or harming Israel’s security.”
The new law allows the army to abduct and imprison those “who violate the law” up to five years, “if the documentation harmed the soldiers’ fighting spirit.”
It also calls for imprisoning the Palestinians for ten years if “they filmed the soldiers with the intent to harm Israel’s security.”
The Information Ministry sent a letter to Philippe Leruth, the elected head of the IFJ, and members of its executive committee, calling on them to intervene.
It said that the new Israeli law is not only racist, but also targets every Palestinian, and every journalist, who documents Israel’s invasions, criminalizes Palestinian journalists, and prevents them from performing their duties, in direct violation of all related International Laws and regulations, especially the Freedom of the Press.
The Ministry added that the law also violates UN Security Council Resolution #2222, which provides protection to the journalists, and stated that Israel is giving its soldiers a free hand in assaulting and arresting the journalists just for performing their duties, and targets the residents who have the right to document the invasions.
“This also gives the army more opportunities to commit massacres and terrorist attacks against the Palestinians,” it said, “This law was drafted first after Israeli soldiers, stationed in fortified posts across the border fence with Gaza, were filmed cheering and celebrating the shooting a Palestinian child with sniper fire.”
BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) activists, in addition to local journalists and social media activists, are documenting the invasions, serious violations. They are documenting crimes committed by the Israeli army with direct support from the political leadership in Tel Aviv.
Several political analysts in Palestine, and Palestinian solidarity activists, said that the new Israeli law is yet another proof that Israel fears the truth, especially since its army has been caught on video so many times, committing serious violations and crimes against unarmed Palestinian protesters, and the civilian population.
They added that this law, which violates every related international law and agreement, would have been described as a form of dictatorship if it was enacted by other countries.
In its letter, the Information Ministry said:
Palestinian Journalists are facing ongoing Israeli aggression, and are paying a high price due to these violations, resulting in the recent deaths of two journalists, Yasser Mortaja and Ahmad Abu Hussein, who were killed by the army in Gaza, this past April.
After Israel released the Elor Azaria, the 19-year-old Israeli soldier who executed the seriously wounded Palestinian, Abdul-Fattah Sharif, and was pardoned and released just nine months after committing his crime, in which he was only sentenced to 18 months in prison, and after Israel arrested and interrogated the Palestinian journalist, Imad Abu Shamsiyya, who was also subject to constant violations for documenting this crime, Tel Aviv now wants to criminalize, and imprison the journalists for performing their duties, for exposing the violations.
Israeli soldiers also carried out 106 violations against Palestinian journalists this year alone, and four violations against media outlets, in addition to six attacks targeting Palestinians who work for media agencies.
The new draft law, which was presented by Member of Knesset Robert Ilatov of “Israel Our Home Party,” with full the backing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is meant to prevent the media, and the people, from documenting the ongoing Israeli crimes against the Palestinians, and grants the army a green light for more violations.
This law also threatens foreign media agencies and journalists, and is meant to terrorize them, to force them to refrain from documenting the army’s violations in occupied Palestine.
This law requires all of us to act, all around the world, and requires immediate intervention from the IFJ to protect the sanctity of the media and its freedoms, as stated by all related International Laws and regulations.
It is worth mentioning that Ilatov attacked the BDS Movement (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions), considering it hostile to the army and stating that the soldiers “are sent to the front lines of BDS groups,” in an attempt to label the nonviolent BDS activists as “combatants.”
Ilatov also said that the Israel “will not allow the BDS Movement and its supporters to slander Israel and dehumanize its soldiers.”

Sinn Féin, the Irish Republican Party, has renewed its call on the government to expel the Israeli ambassador to Ireland and boycott Israel over its persistence in committing crimes and violations against the Palestinian people.
This came in a statement released by Sinn Féin during its annual conference, which kicked off a few days ago.
The Irish party expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people in their legitimate struggle for freedom and the establishment of their independent state.
It also called for executing the decisions taken by Dáil Éireann (the House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) with regard to recognizing the state of Palestine.

Turkey's Prime Minister Yıldırım tells TV show 'The Israeli singer wasn’t good. Israel is only able to kill, not to sing,' arguing that the voting system was changed so Israel could win and host the competition in Jerusalem, thus 'sowing strife between religions.'
Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım accused Israel on Friday of tampering with the Eurovision Song Contest results so it could win it with Netta Barzilai's song "Toy." "The Israeli singer wasn’t good. Israel is only able to kill, not to sing,” he charged during an interview with Turkish Babala TV. |
Yıldırım implied Israel had faked its win in order to hold next year's Eurovision in Jerusalem and instigate a religious war.
"The song contest this year developed to an ideological thing. For the first time, they let Israel win the competition so that they can host it next year," he claimed.
Yıldırım argued Israel had won this year's Eurovision despite not receiving the highest score.
"They let them win despite not getting points as it’s being held in the country next year that won. They changed the voting method. They planned everything so that it can be held in Jerusalem purposely," Yıldırım claimed.
"The imperialists did it since they want the contest to be held in Jerusalem next year in order to sow strife between religions" in the region, he went on to say.
Turkey hasn't participated in the singing competition since 2013. It decided to boycott the Eurovision, claiming there was discrimination in favor of the large countries in the European Union.
Yıldırım told Babala TV that Turkey does not plan to return to the competition.
Turkey is not the only country to come out against the possibility of holding the Eurovision in Jerusalem next year.
Some 22,000 of Iceland's citizens signed an online petition demanding to boycott the contest in the wake of the Gaza border violence and Israel's policy towards Palestinians. As a result, Iceland's RÚV national public broadcasting organization is expected to convene in the near future to decide whether the country will cancel its participation next year.
In The Netherlands, a parody of Israel's winning song "Toy" was criticized by Jewish and pro-Israel groups as "anti-Semitic."

Hewlett Packard (HP) faces over $120 million in potential losses since India’s largest student federation passed a resolution to support the BDS movement and to boycott Hewlett Packard (HP) companies over their well-documented [PDF] complicity in Israel’s grave violations of Palestinian human rights.
Apoorva Gautam, the India-based South Asia coordinator for the Palestinian BDS National Committee, which leads and supports the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement for Palestinian rights, explained:
The Students Federation of India (SFI) is more than 4 million members strong, and on June 9, they joined the global campaign to boycott HP. This means that Hewlett Packard companies now risk losing over 4 million potential clients in India because of their complicity in Israel’s gross violations of Palestinian human rights.
Given that the cheapest HP laptop in India costs about $300, this means that HP may be losing a potential student market of over $120 million. This is enormously significant.
What Palestinians and Indian students are showing is that companies seeking to profit from Israel’s military occupation and discriminatory regime face growing popular opposition and risk a serious hit to both their reputations and pocket-books.
HP has provided technology and services that support Israel’s military occupation and racial discrimination policies, including its devastating siege suffocating nearly 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, and illegal settlements built on stolen Palestinian land.
Today, HP-branded companies provide the Israeli government with the servers that house its notorious population registry, a key component in the apparatus of apartheid [PDF]. Records also indicate that HP-branded companies are still responsible for selling computers to the Israeli military. As such, HP products and services enable racial segregation and denial of basic rights.
In its resolution to boycott HP, the Students Federation of India (SFI) condemned Israel’s recent violence against unarmed Palestinian protesters in Gaza, where Israel killed at least 121 Palestinians and injured more than 13,000 in just the last two months. It also criticized the current right-wing government in India for its “close security and military ties with Israel” and for having become “the largest arms buyer from Israel.”
Vikram Singh, the federation’s General Secretary, promised that the campaign to boycott HP in India would grow:
Our federation will spread the BDS movement and the HP boycott campaign in college and university campuses across India. We will work to convince university administrations to adopt procurement policies that prohibit doing business with HP companies until they prove that they are no longer complicit in Israel’s egregious violations of Palestinian human rights. Until then, this boycott will continue and will grow even stronger.
Abdulrahman Abunahel, a Gaza-based community organizer and coordinator for the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) welcomed the resolution:
Palestinian students and youth movements deeply appreciate the solidarity expressed by our counterparts in the Students Federation of India. As a young Palestinian in Gaza, I know first hand how difficult it is to study, and to simply live, under decades of Israel’s brutal military rule and devastating siege. And I’m heartened by this important gesture of support from India, which reaffirms that where governments fail, people have the the power to act and make a difference.
In the past few years, US church denominations such as the US Presbyterian Church and the United Church of Christ have divested from HP. Friends Fiduciary Corporation, the socially responsible investment firm serving over three hundred Quaker institutions in the United States, divested from HP in 2012. Most recently, the Dublin City Council joined the BDS movement and called for ending ties with HP because of the company’s complicity in Israeli apartheid.
The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) is the largest coalition in Palestinian civil society. It leads and supports the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement for Palestinian rights.

Following the events in Gaza, more and more local authorities in Spain take a hard line against Israel; in Oveido, several events have been cancelled; Valencia passed a decision to become a place 'clean from Israeli apartheid'; leader of radical Left party: Israel is 'illegal.'
The city of Oviedo, the capital of Spain's Asturias region, has decided to cancel a concert of Israel's NK Orchestra, citing political reasons.
The local producer of the concert, which was set to take place in Oviedo this fall, received an official notice from the municipality saying the event's cancellation was the result of a political decision not to hold Israeli activity in the city.
Oviedo also cancelled an Israeli ballet performance.
The Oviedo municipality used to be very friendly towards Israel, but over the past three years it has been governed by a left-wing coalition, which includes extreme left partners. Now, the Israeli Embassy in Madrid reports a lack of cooperation from the city.
This time, however, the Israeli Embassy wasn't involved in the planning or funding of the orchestra concert.
This incident is part of a broader trend that the Israeli Embassy has been witnessing in Spain in different aspects—municipal, cultural and academic—which is gaining momentum in light of recent events in Gaza and political changes in the country: the dismissal of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy by a vote of no confidence and the appointment of a new leader, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (SWP).
The socialists, in order to survive, have to keep the support of their coalition partners—the radical left-wing Podemos party, which has been at the forefront of all Israeli boycott initiatives in municipalities all across Spain and is demanding a tough line against Israel from the government.
The municipality of Valencia, also governed by a left-wing coalition made up of the Podemos party and the SWP, has approved at the beginning of the month a decision to declare itself as a place “clean from the Israeli apartheid,” which will boycott Israel both culturally and economically.
During the vote, 17 out 33 municipality members supported the decision, while 16 opposed. The official proposal expressed solidarity and complete support for the Palestinians while vehemently criticized Israel.
The Israeli Embassy has held talks with the SWP representatives to scrap the move but the talks collapsed. The deputy mayor told the embassy’s representatives that the images coming out of Gaza have swayed the public opinion against Israel.
Eventually, following great pressure from the radical left, the proposal was passed by a small margin of one voice. The municipality’s decision is very concerning for Israel, especially Israeli firms that operate in the city, although so far the decision has no practical meaning.
Sources in the embassy warn that soon other municipalities might follow suit.
The previous Spanish government has taken measures against the phenomenon, but over the past few years, dozens of Spanish cities adopted policies boycotting Israel amid pressure from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS).
However, following the actions of pro-Israeli organizations, including court petitions or threats of lawsuits, the decisions have been reverted in 24 cities.
Pablo Iglesias Turrión, the leader of Podemos—the third largest Spanish party—told a TV station that Israel is a criminal state, “Spain needs to act more decisively against an illegal state like Israel...Our party defines the existence of Israel as illegitimate,” Turrión asserted.
One pro-Israeli group in Spain said that Turrión’s sentiments are anti-Semitic since his party does not call any other state besides Israel as “illegal.” The organization announced they have filed a lawsuit against the municipality of Valencia.
The Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court, have dismissed 16 anti-Israeli boycott decisions that were passed at a municipal level. Additional seven municipalities have reversed the decision voluntarily.

The boycott campaign in Palestine has strongly condemned the intention of a delegation of the Indonesian Sunni Muslim Organization Nahdlatul Ulama headed by Yahya Staquf to visit Israel next week.
In a statement on Sunday, the campaign stressed the importance to refuse such visits especially religious ones because they give Israeli occupation an official and legitimate status, which leads to more criminal practices against Palestinians.
The campaign hailed the Indonesian role in supporting the Palestinian people and cause as well as in defending the Palestinians’ rights and holy places.
The boycott campaign called on the Indonesian government and people to continue boycotting Israel and to exert more efforts in order to isolate the Israeli occupation and to expose their crimes.
The campaign also called for pressuring Israeli occupation authorities to stop the Israeli repeated violations and siege against Palestinians.
