Internet hackers briefly took over an Israeli army Twitter account, the military said Friday, posting an alarming message that a nuclear facility had been hit by rocket fire.
Israeli news website Ynet posted a screen shot of what it said was the offending tweet.
"#WARNING: Possible nuclear leak in the region after 2 rockets hit Dimona nuclear facility" in the south of the country, it read.
The army told AFP that "several incorrect tweets were posted" on its English spokesperson's account (@IDFspokesperson) late Thursday, saying the account had been "compromised."
The account posted an apology to followers and had erased any trace of the hackers' false messages by Friday morning.
Internet hacking group the Syrian Electronic Army claimed responsibility, posting a screen shot of the army's Twitter page with at least two of its fake tweets.
"Always via @Official_SEA16 Long live #Palestine" read the other tweet, linking directly to the SEA's official account.
The hacking came as Israel's army gave regular updates on rocket fire from Gaza hitting southern Israel, after a brief uptick in the past week in cross-border exchanges, including airstrikes by Israel.
Israeli warplanes pounded targets inside Gaza on Thursday and militants fired at least 34 rockets into Israel, the army said.
Dozens of Palestinians have been injured and one killed by Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip over the past week.
Material damage was reported in southern Israel form rocket fire.

Israeli soldiers published dozens of pictures on social media networks calling for murdering the Arabs, and murderous acts of what they described as “revenge” against any person who is an Arab.
Most of the pictures that spread widely in recent days are actually for soldiers on active military duty, carrying Israeli-issued weapons, and calling on their government and political leadership “to declare an open season” for killing the Arabs. One of the soldiers even called for “exterminating all Arabs” in a picture he posted, the Arabs48 news website has reported. Most of the pictures published by the fanatic soldiers are "selfies", taken by the soldiers themselves, in addition to pictures of military uniforms, weapons, and chains, and many wrote on the pictures threatening words such as revenge, or “what we want is revenge”, and some even wrote “give us the chance to wipe them out”. |
Even before fanatic Israeli settlers abducted, burnt and murdered a Palestinian teen In occupied Jerusalem, on Tuesday at evening, Israeli security officials warned that Jewish extremists could be planning acts of abduction and execution of Palestinians.
The settlers also attacked, beat and injured several Palestinians, including children, and even tried to kidnap a number of children before they kidnapped and killed Mohammad Khdeir, 16, in occupied Jerusalem.
Hundreds of Israeli fanatics were tweeting slurs and threats such as “death to Arabs”, and acts of what they called revenge, and calling for more violence “to prevent the Palestinians from attacking Israelis”.
In addition, fanatic extremist settler, Baruch Merzel, who lives in an illegal settlement in occupied Hebron, called for using excessive force against the Palestinians, and for more of what he called “acts of revenge”.
Extremist Israeli Politician and former member of Knesset, Michael Ben Ari, also called for acts of revenge against the Palestinian people.
Many Twitter hashtags were created calling for revenge and acts of murders, some just stating “I want to murder”, and “I want weeping Palestinian mothers”, “I want Widows”, and “I Want Orphaned Palestinian Children”.
Some tweets including direct calls for murdering Arab Member of Knesset, Hanin Zoabi, although death threats against her, and various Arab members of Knesset and politicians, are not something new.
Other posts stated, “the time has come to punish all Arab families, to let every Palestinian know that his wife and children, and he himself, are subject to punishment, their homes will be demolished and families will be imprisoned”.
Thousands of Israelis join online hate campaign
Thousands of Israeli soldiers and civilians have joined social media campaigns calling for the murder of Palestinians since the discovery of three missing Israeli youths on Monday.
Hundreds of photos have been posted on Facebook accounts and twitter calling for revenge following the killing of three Israeli teens who went missing on June 12.
A Facebook page entitled "The People of Israel Demand Vengeance!" gained over 36,000 likes in just under two days before being removed, as users posted pictures of themselves holding signs demanding revenge.
Israeli soldiers, some of whom may currently serve in the occupied territories, posted pictures online calling for the death of Palestinians.
The online incitement campaign is the latest in a series of social media movements in Israel defending or promoting violence by Israeli forces.
In April, a Facebook page created to support an Israeli soldier who cocked his gun and aimed at Palestinian teenagers in Hebron received over 60,000 likes.
The soldier, from the elite Nahal infantry unit, was suspended after video footage of the incident emerged.
Following the disappearance of three Israel teens on June 12, over 10,000 people joined an online campaign to kill a Palestinian "terrorist" every hour until the teens were returned to their families.
The online campaigns have manifested into brutal attacks on Palestinians.
Late Tuesday, a Palestinian teenager, Muhammad Abu Khdeir, was kidnapped in Shufat and his body was later found in west Jerusalem.
The murder is suspected to be a "revenge" attack by Israeli settlers.
Earlier Tuesday, hundreds of Israelis marched through Jerusalem's town center chanting "Death to Arabs!".
A mob of young Israelis then tried to attack a Palestinian worker at a McDonald's restaurant in Jerusalem while a young Israeli was arrested for spraying pepper spray at a Palestinian taxi driver.
Numerous racist attacks were reported across Jerusalem and Israel.
Israeli minister of justice, Tzipi Livni, on Wednesday condemned the social media campaign.
Days earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on his official twitter account: "Vengeance for the blood of a small child, Satan has not yet created. Neither has vengeance for the blood of 3 pure youths who were on their way home to their parents who will not see them anymore."

As Israeli forces deployed across the West Bank in hot pursuit of three teenagers who went missing on Thursday, the eyes of the Israeli public have been glued to screens across the country as they watched the drama unfold.
Thousands of Israelis have taken to social media to support campaigns to demand that Palestinians #BringBackOurBoys. Following the lead of the prime minister, the Israeli public has placed blame on Hamas and the Palestinians more broadly, despite the fact that no group has yet claimed responsibility.
The cries of the Israeli public for justice are now resounding throughout the English, Hebrew, and Arabic blogospheres.
For Palestinians, however, the drama is not unfolding on television, but before their very eyes. And with more than 5,000 Palestinians currently sitting in Israeli prison cells, many view the Israeli campaign with deep skepticism.
"What is three among thousands?" Ali Qaraqe, a Palestinian political satirist, asked during an interview at his Bethlehem shop. "A half-million Palestinians have entered occupation prisons (since 1967), and no one ever asked about them," he continued.
For Qaraqe, the disparities between how the media and Israeli public has reacted to the missing three teenagers -- compared to the thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including more than 100 arrested in the last 24 hours -- has made it hard to take the campaign seriously.
"Don't the prisoners also have poor families? It's as if the Israelis are humans but we are from a different planet," he said.
Qaraqe highlighted the timing of the boys' disappearance, which came on the 50th day of a hunger strike by more than 125 Palestinian prisoners who are being detained with charge or trial by Israeli authorities. The strike has been hardly covered by the Israeli media, and Qaraqe argued that many Palestinians have concluded that the only way prisoners get out of jail is through prisoner exchanges.
"Israelis have to understand their responsibility in the occupation." Qaraqe continued: "You are the occupiers, you are the ones arresting us and killing us every day. You have to deal with us, because for every action you take against us there will be a reaction."
Indeed, the brutal Israeli reprisals in recent days have highlighted the tenuous realities of life under occupation for millions of Palestinians. In addition to the 125 arrested in door-to-door overnight and daytime raids across the West Bank in the last 24 hours, overnight air strikes injured a woman and a girl in their homes in the southern Gaza Strip.

Khaled Quzmar, a legal adviser at Defense for Children International-Palestine, argues that while many Palestinians sympathize with the suffering of the families of the missing boys, the double standards are staggering.
"We support the right to life of all Israeli children, but not at the expense of Palestinian children," he told Ma'an in a telephone interview.
"1,400 Palestinian children have been killed by Israel since 2000, and more than 200 are currently in prison, suffering from all kinds of torture," he added.
Quzmar also stressed that Israel has endangered the lives of its own children by transferring them to zones under military occupation. More than 500,000 Jews live in Israeli settlements across the occupied West Bank, and the three boys went missing while trying to hitch hike in the Gush Etzion settlement west of Hebron, built atop lands confiscated from local Palestinians.
"These children went missing in a settlement, which is internationally recognized as being illegal and in occupied lands. The responsibility lies with the Israeli government which brought these children to an illegal settlement built on occupied lands," Quzmar argued.
"There is no Palestinian who wants any person on earth to live the moments they have had to live through … But but every single family in Palestine has seen the violations of their children’s rights by the occupation," he continued.
"Palestinian families have been asking for many years to 'bring back our boys!'"
Quzmar told Ma’an that earlier on Sunday he had passed through Hebron, whose 600,000 inhabitants are currently under a tight military siege, en route to see his brother for the first time in 11 years. Quzmar’s brother, like 40 percent of Palestinian men, has been in Israeli prisons for a large portion of his life, and Sunday was the day of his release after more than a decade of incarceration.
But passing through the checkpoints around Hebron, and the large concrete barriers erected to prevent Palestinian traffic, he lamented that the Israeli attacks were now renewing a cycle of violence that would only hurt more Palestinian civilians.
"They are doing whatever they want to the Palestinians. Hebron is besieged, and everything is closed," he told Ma'an. "Children and mothers have to go walking through the checkpoints, as cars are forbidden, and they stand there waiting for the soldiers to let them through."
"What is the fault of the children at the checkpoints?"
As the search for the three teenagers drags on with no end in sight, an entire population is being held hostage to the whims of the military as the Israeli public demands blood. For Palestinians, besieged for the last seven years in Gaza and now Hebron as well, there is a fear that the lockdown could potentially mean a renewal of violence and increased restrictions.
Bethlehem-based satirist Qaraqe, however, is not fazed.
"When these things happen, Israelis need to ask themselves: Why do they take our children? Because they love to take children? No, there's a reason, and they need to realize it."
"What is the point of peace if we do not have our rights and our prisoners are still in prison? This is not the kind of peace we want."

Over 10,000 people have joined an online campaign to kill a Palestinian "terrorist" every hour until three missing Israeli teens are returned to their families, Israeli media reported Sunday.
The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported on its website that within hours of its creation, a Facebook page calling for the hourly assassination of Palestinian "terrorists" had reached 10,000 likes.
The Facebook page called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to "take responsibility instead of holding (President Mahmoud) Abbas responsible" for the alleged kidnapping of three Israeli teens, Maariv reported.
Three Israelis, aged 16-19, disappeared Thursday night from nearby the Jewish-only settlement of Gush Etzion.
Netanyahu said Abbas was responsible for the safe return of the youths, and blamed Hamas for kidnapping them.
Palestinian leadership denied responsibility for preventing the kidnapping of the youths.
Ehab Bessaiso, spokesman for the Palestinian unity government, stressed Sunday in a statement that the three youths went missing from Area C, the approximately 62 percent of the West Bank that is under full Israeli military control.
Hamas denied involvement, calling Netanyahu's claims "stupid."

The Israeli Jerusalem District Police indicted Haim Gamliel, 24, and three minors, who under the assumed name Yossi Cohen, used several WhatsApp groups and a Facebook page called “Jews Against Assimilation” to organize attacks on Arabs for racist reasons. The indictment attributes to Gamliel charges of conspiring to carry out a crime for racist motives, and assault, it turns out that the messages sent in the group were aimed at finding and reporting incidents of “assimilation” and rescuing Jewish girls,” and called for attacking Arabs.
Gamliel’s conviction was made possible following a police investigation, after an Arab worker in a store selling handbags in Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim quarter was attacked. The attack, by three youths aged 16-17, took place in January. The three were arrested about a week ago, and confessed and said they had beaten the man “because he is an Arab,” and said they were sent to the site by the WhatsApp group run by Gamliel.
Before the attack, Gamliel wrote in the group: “We are a very right-wing organization who hate the idea that Arabs hunt Jewish girls, so we opened a Facebook account of a very pretty, attractive Jewish girl, and she is indeed attractive — she’s attracted many Arabs, sets times and places to meet with them, these terrorists arrive and don’t get anything but a beating.”
The police and GSS agents investigating the price tag incidents in the past month in Yokneam arrested another four suspects and the police are checking their role in the incidents.

The Facebook administration has removed the page of Hamas Information Office in Lebanon, which was established several months ago to publish the Movement's positions in Lebanon.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Hamas Movement strongly condemned the measure taken by Facebook to close its page, considering it a racist practice against the Palestinian people and their national cause.
The Facebook administration was absolutely biased in favor of Israel, where a number of pages belonging to Hamas and Qassam Brigades were shut down, the statement added.
The Movement stressed its determination to continue defending the Palestinian people's rights and freedom despite all media, political and military attempts to silence the voice of justice and resistance.

Activists worldwide launched on Friday "مي_وملح" Campaign - meaning ‘Water_and_Salt’ - in 14 languages to show solidarity with Palestinians on an open hunger strike for 16 days. The campaigners will mobilize for the hunger-striking Palestinians, who are protesting the policy if administrative detention illegally pursued by Israeli courts against them, on special media platforms.
The initiative arose out of the need to expose the suffering of 130 administrative detainees internationally, in an attempt to mount pressure on the Israeli authorities to respond to the detainees’ demands.
There are currently 175 Palestinians in administrative detention, including 11 MPs, elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
‘Administrative detention’ usually targets Palestinian politicians, activists and academics, who can be held for up to six months without charge or trial, based on secret evidence which neither they nor their lawyers have access to.
Frequently, the order under which they are held is renewed on or just before their detention is due to end. This process can be continued indefinitely. At least half of ‘administrative detainees’ never have a trial.
