Sheikh Mohamed Hussein, Grand Mufti of Palestine and Jerusalem, appealed to the international community including official and public institutions to protect the Palestinian refugees trapped in Yarmouk camp in Syria.
In a statement on Sunday, Sheikh Hussein demanded neutralizing the camp in the ongoing fighting as well as working on delivering aid to those refugees who are victims of a struggle without being part of it.
The Grand Mufti, who is also a preacher of the Aqsa Mosque, slammed some of the international authorities for not expediting to protect Yarmouk’s refugees in face of bombing and attacks by the Islamic State’s (IS) fighters along with other armed groups.
The IS fighters were able to storm Yarmouk camp in Syria last Wednesday and wreaked havoc in the already devastated camp.

The European al-Wafa campaign called on the armed parties in Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees in Syria to work immediately on saving the lives of civilians by halting the fighting taking place inside the camp that has been under siege for 637 consecutive days.
In a press statement on Saturday evening, the Campaign called for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Yarmouk camp, warning of a possible humanitarian disaster.
The ceasefire aims at evacuating the civilian residents to safer locations and to take out the wounded safely away from severe bombing targeting the camp as well as to provide them with appropriate treatment, the statement mentioned.
The European Campaign pointed out that most of Yarmouk camp’s people are trapped inside their homes with no water, food or electricity. They cannot go out because of intense bombing and the large-scale arrest campaigns waged by the Islamic State’s (IS) fighters.
It also demanded founding safe humanitarian pathways for the entry of aid for the people trapped inside the camp.
The Campaign appealed to all international organizations along with relief and medical institutions to move urgently for the relief of 20,000 people including 3,500 children stuck inside the camp especially after the closure of all medical points and the assault on the only hospital which was run by volunteer individual efforts.
The European al-Wafaa Campaign underlined that the Palestinian families in Yarmouk camp fled to nearby neighborhoods and towns in order to avoid the heinous crimes committed by the IS fighters inside the besieged camp.

Osama Hamdan, Hamas’s foreign relations chief, said in a press statement aired afternoon Saturday that Palestinians are not responsible for what is going on at the Yarmouk camp and it is just unfair to hold them accountable
He called for ceasing clashes in the camp and lifting the blockade imposed on Palestinian refugees.
He appealed to the Palestinian factions to rise above all disagreements stirred over the past few years and start to work on halting aggressions on the Yarmouk shelter.
He urged the Palestine Liberation Organization to assume its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people and to stop its feet-dragging as regards refugees in Syria.
For his part, the group’s political bureau member Ezzet Resheq said, in Facebook statements posted Saturday afternoon, that efforts by Khaled Mishaal and the Movement’s leadership have been underway to stop the rivers of bloodshed at the camp and relieve the ongoing tension.
He said Mishaal and other Hamas leaders have been keeping tabs on the tragic state of affairs in the Yarmouk camp, calling for neutralizing Palestinian refugee camps in Syria from all internal conflicts.
He urged all concerned parties to immediately step in and save Palestinian refugees before it is too late.
The situation has gone from bad to worse after ISIS terrorists took control of the camp on the Damascus southern outskirts, where Palestinian refugees have suffered years of bombing, army siege and militia control.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) said it had made contacts with Arab and international parties to save al-Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus from the grave humanitarian situation that emerged following its occupation by ISIS militants.
In a press release on Saturday, the PA called for necessarily neutralizing the Palestinian refugee camps in the Syrian conflict and maintaining the Palestinian principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other Arab countries.
For its part, the Palestinian National Council called for not implicating al-Yarmouk camp in the Syrian conflict, affirming that the Palestinians abroad do not take sides and are committed not to interfere in the internal affairs of the Arab countries.
The Council condemned in a statement the ISIS group for invading the camp, and described its move as a new attempt to turn the camp into a battlefield where there would be more suffering for its residents.
It demanded the international community and its institutions to provide protection and aid for al-Yarmouk refugees and declare their camp a neutral zone.

The Hamas Movement has renewed its appeal for an immediate halt to the armed violence in al-Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus and spare the blood of its innocent residents to avoid further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
In a press release on Saturday, Hamas reiterated the need for neutralizing the Palestinian refugee camps in the Syrian conflict, pointing to the fact that the Palestinians in the diaspora are only guests looking forward to returning to the homes they were expelled from.
"The Palestinian refugees in al-Yarmouk camp in the Syrian capital Damascus are living in very dire humanitarian conditions under ongoing blockade imposed on them for two years, during which thousands of them have died as a result of hunger, thirst, disease and shelling, while the rest of them are waiting for death because of the prolonged siege and their exposure to continuous bombing and killing," the Movement underlined.
It warned that the humanitarian situation became much worse in the camp after it was occupied and turned into a fighting zone by an extremist armed group.
Hamas affirmed that its leadership has embarked on making contacts with all concerned parties in an effort to avoid further bloodshed and suffering in the camp.
It also urged the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and all human rights groups to shoulder their responsibilities and provide al-Yarmouk refugees with protection against blockade and aggression.

Addressing the Palestinian masses who took to Gaza streets to join an evening rally staged in Khan Younis in solidarity with the Yarmouk refugees, Bardawil said it is high time everybody stepped in and took up their responsibilities to lift the blockade imposed on Palestinian refugees in Syria.
“Let us all stand united in the face of such injustice perpetrated against our people,” he said.
The Hamas leader appealed to the Arab and Muslim nations to work on halting the tragedy rocking the Yarmouk camp and unblocking access ways out of the shelter on humanitarian grounds.
ISIS terrorists have taken control of the camp on the Damascus outskirts, where Palestinian refugees have suffered years of bombing, army siege and militia control.
“The camp has been subjected to all kinds of betrayal”, he said because it had turned into a symbol for the Palestinians’ right of return.
He affirmed that Palestinians never meddle in the internal affairs of Arab states, reiterating the inherently peaceful character of the Palestinian people.
“Our enemy is the Israeli occupation only”, he said, adding: “Take your hands off the Yarmouk camp; take your hands off our children, our women, and our people— the ones who have always coexisted with you and lived among you for so long.”
He appealed to the human rights institutions, most notably the UNRWA, to work on assuaging the crisis at the blockaded Yarmouk camp and provide the refugees with the needed food, water, and security.
