Deir Balout refugee camp in Syria
When one sees the suffering and images of Deir Balout refugee camp, the displacement and Nakba that befell the Palestinians in 1948 come to mind, but when one goes deeper into the details, the realization that comes to mind is that the Nakba continues to this day, but in its worst form, amid Arab and international silence.

Deir Balout

More than 850 families, including more than 350 Palestinian families, live in the Jandairis district of the northern rural area of Afrin in Syria, with a total of 1,500 Palestinians, most of them used to live in the Yarmouk refugee camp, south of Damascus.
According to director of the Center for Media, Ammar Al-Baylouni, “since its establishment, the camp has suffered from a severe shortage of basic services such as food, water, clothing and housing.”

He explained that people live in tents provided by the Turkish AFAD organization in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent, pointing out that humanitarian bodies do not offer anything to the people except for little.

“The camp is suffering from a severe lack of services, where people suffer from a great shortage of water, especially drinking water, in addition to public toilets, which is a major problem for the people,” noted Al-Baylouni.

Poverty and unemployment

Al-Baylouni reveals that the camp does not have any clinics except for a single health center that cannot cover the medical needs of the camp, pointing out that people have to transfer their patients to hospitals in the surrounding areas on motorcycles most of the time.

He explains that people live in “extremely poor conditions in the camp, where unemployment is very high because the camp is far from industrial areas that can provide jobs for people there. This means that people can’t afford their basic needs.”

Children are affected the most

“Children are affected the most,” he said. “The biggest tragedy is the dropout of children from school, losing their education, which has been the biggest asset for Palestinian refugees in Syria over the past years.”

The school of the camp is located in a simple tent attended by some volunteers where some lessons are given, which do not meet the minimum requirement for the children. There are no seats, no boards and no study materials, to achieve the desired goal, which pushed some families to stop sending their children to the school.

Winter is a tragedy

With the onset of winter, a new disaster takes place against the people of the Deir Balout camp. The camp’s ground is of white soil that does not withstand rains and turns into large clay pools that increase the suffering of the people.

“The lack of heating in the camp foreshadows a major disaster looming if the concerned parties do not intervene to save the people from a tragic fate that threatens their lives and that of their children in an area known for its harsh winter and hot summer,” he added.

Absence of the PA and UNRWA

People in the camp wonder about the absence of UNRWA, which is supposed to be concerned with the situation of Palestine refugees in the diaspora.

The residents of the Syrian north, including the Deir Balout camp, complain of the total absence of UNRWA and the failure to provide any of its services provided in areas controlled by the Syrian regime, pointing out that the number of Palestinian families in the northern regions of Syria amount to more than 1,500 from all camps for Palestine refugees in Syria.

The residents also complain about the complete absence of the institutions of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). None of their institutions have worked to help the residents of the camp during this terrible situation.

Al-Baylouni added that all relief and charitable organizations and institutions operating in northern Syrian have been absent from the camp, except for the Palestinians of Syria for Relief and Development, which is trying to provide the necessary assistance to the people in light of the decline in support provided to them.

He pointed out that the Palestinians of Syria for Relief and Development provides from time to time small quantities of food baskets that do not meet the need of the people in the camp, who are in need of joint efforts of institutions to send relief material to the camp and its inhabitants.

Urgent appeal

The 302 Body for Defending the Rights of Refugees called on UNRWA to immediately intervene to provide all humanitarian needs of some 1,500 Palestinian refugees, women, children, elderly and people with special needs, who were forced to flee the Yarmouk refugee camp and camps in southern Damascus six months ago to the Deir Balout camp in northern Syria.

The 302 Body said in a press release that the camp is located in an area called Wadi al-Afai'i, which is known for the large number of snakes. It threatens the lives of refugees, who live in tents that do not protect them from heat in summer or cold in winter. People have night guards to make sure that snakes or predators don’t enter their tents.

The press released described the humanitarian situation of the refugees in the camp as catastrophic, stressing that the demands of refugees who have been protesting for three weeks are legitimate and that UNRWA should provide all education needs, hospitalization, relief, accommodation, clothing, psychological support and all other services to the Palestinian refugees there.

The 302 Body expressed its disappointment at not visiting the camp by any UNRWA staff member to date and stressed that the responsibility for providing protection and humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian refugees in the Deir Balout camp, which is located inside Syrian territory, one of UNRWA's five areas of operation, lies primarily on UNRWA.

It warned against the danger threatening refugees living in the camp and the fear of people of sending their children alone to the public toilets which are away from the tents, and the need to accompany them, and that the camp lacks a hospital, a school, a kindergarten and a clinic.

“The nearest hospital is about half an hour away. People are forced to take their patients to the hospitals using motorcycles. When a woman wants to give birth, there is no ambulance or any other means of transport,” it concluded.
Palestinian refugee tents north of Syria flooded by rain torrents
Picture
Tents have been uprooted and others have fallen apart as torrential downpours have swamped Deir Ballout Camp for Palestinian refugees in Jindires in Afrin, north of Syria.

Pictures and videos circulated on social media show dozens of Palestinians lying in the streets, without roofs over their heads, and children shivering of cold.

Refugees have not had a moment’s rest as they have been trying to rinse out the overflow caused by the heavy rain showers.

350 Palestinian families sheltered in Deir Ballout Camp, along with 75 other families taking refuge in al-Shabiba Camp, in I’zaz area, in Aleppo’s suburbs, have been struggling for survival after they were forcibly deported from Yarmouk Camp, south of Damascus.

The rampant Syrian warfare has had disastrous fallouts on the Palestinian refugees, hundreds of whom have been pronounced dead due to war-related incidents while hundreds of others have been locked up in Syrian government dungeons, where dozens have also been tortured to death.

Displaced Palestinian families north of Syria continue to rally for the third week running, protesting their tragic living conditions in the poorly-equipped Deir Ballout Camp.

The protesters have appealed to UNRWA to live up to its responsibilities as regards dozens of hopeless families and to provide them with much-needed cash aids, medical items, and relief services.

The refugees have also called on the Palestine Liberation Organization and the international human rights institutions to take urgent action in order to tone down the abject situation endured by Palestinian families north of Syria.

Israel works to move UNRWA from Jerusalem’s Shufat camp
Picture
Israeli municipal teams stormed on Tuesday Shufat refugee camp, in occupied Jerusalem, under heavy police protection and toured the camp.

Local sources said that the Israeli teams carried out cleaning across the refugee camp in an unprecedented move, as this was usually done by workers from the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA.)

Few hours later, the Israeli mayor of occupied Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, raided the camp escorted by a large number of Israeli forces.

Barkat had earlier announced plans to remove UNRWA from the occupied city, accusing the agency of "operating illegally and promoting incitement against Israel."

Commenting on the Israeli municipality’s move, UNRWA expressed deep concern on the matter.

"While these threats are worrying, they will not change facts on the ground since UNRWA exists based on international resolutions and binding bilateral agreements."

Barkat Raids Shu’fat Refugee Camp

The Israeli mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, raided the Shu’fat refugee camp in occupied Jerusalem City, escorted by Israeli forces, on Tuesday afternoon.

Spokesperson of the Fateh movement in Jerusalem, Thaer Fasfous, said that Barkat raided and toured the camp.

Barkat’s raid to Shufat comes a few hours after teams from the Israeli municipality had carried out a cleaning  procedure across the refugee camp, in an unprecedented move, as this was usually done by workers from the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA.)

Earlier this month, according to Ma’an, the Israeli mayor had announced plans to remove UNRWA from East Jerusalem, accusing the agency of “operating illegally and promoting incitement against Israel.”

Following Barkat’s statement, UNRWA expressed deep concern on the matter. However, it later dismissed the mayor’s threats, saying: “While these threats are worrying, they will not change facts on the ground since UNRWA exists based on international resolutions and binding bilateral agreements.”

Gaza Child Drowns To Death As Immigrants’ Boat Capsizes
Picture
A boat, filled with immigrants capsized off the coast of Bodrum resort town, northwest of Turkey, leading to the death two children, including a Palestinian child from Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

The Turkish Coast Guard has confirmed that the boat capsized near Bodrum, leading to the death of two children.

One of the slain children, identified as Malak Rabah Abu Jazar, only four years of age, is from Rafah city, while several members of her family were injured in the incident.

A second child, a seven-year-old girl,  was also killed in the incident.

The Daily Sabah Newspaper said two children were killed, and eighteen migrants were rescued when the boat, “carrying illegal migrants sank off the Coast of Bodrum, a resort town in southwestern Turkey located near the Greek island of Kos.” video

The capsized boat was carrying 34 migrants from various nationalities that were still being verified at the time of this report, while fourteen of them managed to safely swim to the shore.

The migrants boarded the 9-meter-long fiber glass boat just minutes before it started sinking off the beach of Gümbet beach in Bodrum.

The Daily Sabah said locals heard the screams of the migrants and called the police, before Coastal Guards rushed to the area and initiated a rescue campaign.

In a Facebook post, the Abu Jazar family has confirmed Malak’s death, and said that Rabah Abul-Ghani Abu Jazar, and Aa’ed Abdullah Abu Jazar, along with their families, were rescued.

The Turkish coastal police launched an investigation and reportedly detained four suspects, whose identities were not revealed, but are believed to be smugglers helping the migrants sneak out of Turkey and into Greece, Daily Sabah has reported.

It added that the capsized boat had the capacity to carry ten persons, but was instead carrying 34.

The Turkish coastguard is searching for potential survivors, especially since the accounts about the number of people aboard the boat are conflicting.

The Daily Sabah said the fourteen migrants from Somalia, and Palestine, were located in the area, and told the police that they were supposed to be on board the capsized boats, but couldn’t do so because it was already overcrowded before it sailed.

188 Palestinians also died in unknown locations while 1,543 others were pronounced dead in refugee camps and communities across war-torn Syria.

AGPS found out that 1,198 refugees were killed under shelling; 1,063 were fatally gunned down, while 558 others were tortured to death in Syrian dungeons.

Scores of Palestinian refugees have also been left wounded in Syria’s seven-year deadly warfare.

Renewed clashes in Palestinian refugee camp leave two dead
Picture
Two Palestinians were killed and 22 others were injured Tuesday in renewed clashes in Southern Lebanon's Mieh Mieh refugee camp, according to local media sources.

Violent clashes first erupted in the camp on Monday between Hezbollah-backed members of the Ansar Allah group and the Palestinian Fatah movement.

At least 15 persons were injured during Monday’s clashes.

The armed clashes had continued on Tuesday, leaving at least two Fatah members dead and 22 others injured including a Hamas member who was shot while trying to stop the gunfire.

The sources said a cease-fire had been hammered out at a meeting of representatives from leading Palestinian factions including Hamas Movement held at the Lebanese army’s nearby regional headquarters.

Located roughly four kilometers east of the Lebanese city of Sidon, all three groups -- Fatah, Hamas and Ansar Allah -- reportedly maintain an armed presence inside the camp.

Established in 1954, the Mieh Mieh refugee camp is currently home to some 5,000 Palestinian refugees.

Palestinian refugees in northern Syria launch cry for help
Picture
Dozens of displaced Palestinian families north of Syria continue to rally in Deir Ballout Camp, protesting their tragic living conditions in the poorly-equipped camp.

The refugees urged UNRWA to live up to its responsibilities as regards dozens of hopeless families and to provide them with much-needed cash aids, medical items, and relief services.

The refugees also appealed to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the Turkish authorities, and the international human rights institutions to take urgent action in order to tone down the abject situation endured by Palestinian families north of Syria.

Palestinian refugees sheltered north of Syria have been enduring a tragic situation. Most of them have been crammed in underequipped tents and denied their rights to vital services and much-needed items, including heating kit.

Rodents and insects have swamped the camp as a result of the poor hygiene. An acute dearth in bread has added bad to worse.

The refugees’ stressed their commitment to their right to return to their motherland—Palestine—and retrieve their inalienable rights.

They further lashed out at the sanctions imposed by the US President Donald Trump on the Palestinians as part of the notorious “deal of the century”.

At least 320 Palestinian have sought shelter in Deir Ballout Camp.

75 other families who were displaced from Yarmouk and have taken refuge in al-Shabiba refugee camp, in Izaz, in Aleppo’s outskirts, have been struggling for survival in the poverty-stricken area.

At least 200 Palestinian refugees have been pronounced dead in war-torn Syria as a result the tough blockade imposed on Yarmouk Camp.

Canada provides financial assistance to Palestinian refugees
Picture
The Canadian government announced that it intends to provide emergency financial assistance to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which is suffering from a severe financial crisis due to United States suspending its funding.

The Canadian Foreign Ministry released a statement on Friday, confirming that Canada’s support of up to $50 million over two years for Palestinian refugees through the UNRWA.

Of the support announced, up to $40 million will contribute to meeting the basic education, health and livelihood needs of millions of Palestinian refugees, especially women and children. The funding will also contribute to stability in the region by providing basic services to people whose needs would otherwise be unmet.

Furthermore, up to $10 million of Canada’s support will provide emergency life-saving assistance to more than 460,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria and Lebanon, through UNRWA’s Emergency Appeal for the Syria regional crisis.

Along the same line, Canada will also provide up to $12.5 million for Right to Play International.

With support from the Government of Canada, Right to Play International will collaborate with UNRWA to help create a more inclusive environment for Palestinian refugee children and to respond to existing educational gaps and needs in the West Bank and Gaza.

UNRWA slams Israeli plans to close its Jerusalem office
Picture
UN refugee agency UNRWA on Tuesday warned against the seriousness of Israeli move to closed its offices in occupied Jerusalem.

In a statement issued Tuesday, UNRWA decried as “irresponsible” Israeli plans to close the agency’s offices in the occupied city.

“UNRWA is carrying out operations within the framework of the UN Charter and bilateral and multilateral agreements which are still valid as well as relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly," UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness told Jordan’s Petra news agency.

He said the refugee agency has been authorized by the UN to provide protection and aid to Palestinian refugees in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem.

“Such messages by top elected figures in Israel are irresponsible and very serious,” he said.

Last week, Israel’s Jerusalem municipality announced plans to remove the UN agency from the occupied city.

According to Israeli Channel Two, U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to end financial aid to UNRWA has encouraged Israel to take move.
