12:00 GMT: The U.S. has ordered its diplomats to leave Lebanon as Congress debates Syria military strikes, in a move that will be interpreted that the possibility of a military strikes has moved a step closer.
The US State Department has ordered nonessential U.S. diplomats and family members to leave Lebanon due to security concerns. They have also urged US citizens to avoid all travel to Lebanon because of current safety and security concerns.
"The Department of State drew down non-emergency personnel and family members from Embassy Beirut due to threats to U.S. Mission facilities and personnel," a statement on the Beirut embassy's website said.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Mark Dankof, political commentator, about a new video footage showing foreign-backed militants in Syria killing seven captured government soldiers execution style.
What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Well once again we are seeing just another horrific crime that has been committed by these insurgents. The more we see at these various video clips it seems they are more adamant that the United States and its allies want to support these terrorists. Why is that the case?
Dankof: Well it's clearly the case because Israel gets whatever it wants. The fact of the matter is between the Zionist ...[entity] of Israel and the Zionist occupied American government.
War crimes are okay as long as they are being committed by people that control the Israeli government or people who are fulfilling the Israeli agenda.
The United States had no problem with Saddam Hussein using chemical gas during the Iran-Iraq war against Iran, the United States has said nothing about Israel use of white phosphorous munitions both in Gaza, Operation Cast Lead in 2009 or Israeli induced white phosphorous murders in southern Lebanon in that conflict.
But the fact of the matter is what is most revelatory here is that a global research article that came out today, Michel Chossudovsky site shows that Americans opposed this conflict overwhelmingly, an American involvement in this conflict by surfing like a 499 to 1 margin in regard to calls being made to their congressmen and senators and yet obviously most people have concluded that the vote is going to go the other way because of the Israeli lobbies that control the American Congress and Senate as well as the executive branch of the government.
One other thing is that there are several polls that have been conducted by Israeli newspapers that show that Israel wants an attack on Syria, but it does not overwhelmingly, its people do not want the Israeli defense forces doing it. They want the United States and European powers to do it on their behalf.
This is what's going on here. It's clearly illegal, it is dreadful, it is murderous and once again the criminality of the Zionist regime over many years is unfortunately now mirrored by the criminality of an American government that has been in league with these people since the late 1940’s.
Press TV: Well, we are looking at these type of individuals and these horrific crimes that they have committed. How likely is the United States support for this type of element likely to backfire when you are training, when you are funding, when you are arming people that appeared to not have any type of moral conscience, then isn’t it likely that it will basically come back and hunt them?
Dankof: Well I think that that's true in terms of international opinion and blowback. What I'm waiting for is to see whether or not the people of the United States get off their high dance and turn off Thursday night football tonight, the opening of the NFL season and start caring about what these policies that their government is supporting are doing not only to our image in the world but in fact they are going to result in more of hundreds and millions and billions of dollars ultimately being spent by the United States government on these murderous activities as well as the deaths not only a thousands, potentially a millions of innocent people in the Middle East over time but the deaths of more American men and women for absolutely nothing other than the Israeli agenda.
And until the American public figures this out, it seems that the Zionist occupied government of United States and the media, the American media that is aiding these people would just continue but more of the same.
But Paul Craig Roberts is in effect correct. They will run out of men, they will run out of money at some point, they are already out of credibility and the fact of the matter is that there is a super whining in all of this, it is that the American empire is quite likely ultimately to collapse as the result of these policies and maybe to be replaced again by what my forefathers would have referred to as the old American Republic that was ruled by a constitution and a rule of law. An Iraqi official close to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told Lebanese newspaper Al-Mustaqbal that Syrian President Bashar Assad agreed to step down from power on his own conditions.
Acording to the report, Assad's conditions were that elections were to be held almost immediately and that he would be immune from any international legal prosecution. Nonetheless, the report claimed that the US refused.

Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud
Syria’s Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud says Washington’s military strike against the Arab country aims to “support and protect” the Israeli regime in the region.
By attacking Syria, the US and the West seek to target the anti-Israeli resistance front in the region which comprises Syria, Iran and Hezbollah, said the envoy in a Thursday meeting in Tehran with representatives of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA).
The Syrian government and nation will defend their country by standing up to foreign plots and will emerge victorious, he added.
He emphasized that Syria is not alone in countering the ongoing crisis and noted that certain countries in the region and across the world as well as the resistance front will support Damascus against any military attack.
Washington seeks to kill the Syrian people and wreak havoc on the country just as it has left behind a trail of death and destruction in Iraq and other US-occupied countries, Mahmoud pointed out.
He added that the US has breached the UN Charter and other international regulations.
The Syrian people and government will stand up to the West and the US and believe that they will finally achieve victory, Mahmoud said.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
The call for military action against Syria intensified after foreign-backed opposition forces accused the government of President Bashar al-Assad of launching a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.
Damascus has vehemently denied the accusations, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false-flag operation.
On August 31, US President Barack Obama said he had decided that Washington must take military action against the Syrian government, which would mean a unilateral military strike without a UN mandate.
Obama said despite having made up his mind, he will take the case to the US Congress. But he added that he is prepared to order military action against the Syrian government at any time.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized senior US officials including Secretary of State John Kerry in particular for “openly lying” about the status of armed opposition in Syria.
At congressional hearings this week, while making the case for President Barack Obama’s plan for military action in Syria, Kerry told senators that the armed opposition in Syria “has increasingly become more defined by its moderation,” implying that al-Qaeda affiliated groups no longer make up the majority of the militants in the Arab country.
“It’s not pleasant for me to see this. While we communicate with them and assume they are decent people, he [Kerry] lies openly. And he knows he lies,” said Putin ahead of Obama’s arrival in St. Petersburg for the G20 summit.
Kerry’s assessment of the armed opposition in Syria appears at odds with US and European intelligence sources that assert extremists by far make up the majority of the militant groups fighting against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Intelligence sources also say the al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group al-Nusra Front is better organized and trained among other militant groups in Syria, according to Reuters.
State Dept. spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki defended Kerry’s position, calling Putin's comment "preposterous."
The United States has claimed the Syrian government was behind a deadly chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus last month, even though there is no evidence linking the attack to the government forces.
The Obama administration is preparing to attack Syria under the pretext of the chemical weapons attack. Russia, a key ally of Syria, has strongly rejected the notion of military action.
Last month, Obama canceled a summit meeting with Putin after a series of US-Russian disputes, including Moscow’s decision to grant asylum to American whistleblower Edward Snowden.

A military attack against Syria is a US-Israeli plot aimed at preventing Russia from playing a role in the Middle East developments, a political analyst tells Press TV.
Mark Glenn, a member of the Crescent and Cross Solidarity Movement, said a strike on Syria is part of a US-Israeli project to drive Russia out of the Middle East, just like the 1967 USS Liberty incident in which the American surveillance ship was attacked by Israel in a false-flag operation to put the blame on “Egypt which was Soviet Union’s biggest client state in the region at that time.”
“And so we are seeing basically a replay of all of this and that the United States and Israel are desperately trying to push the Russians out of the region permanently,” Glenn said.
He pointed out that Russia is trying its best to counter any move by the US as Moscow intends to remain in the region even at the cost of engaging in a war with Washington.
The rhetoric of war against Syria first gained momentum on August 21, when the militants operating inside the Middle Eastern country and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition claimed that over a thousand people had been killed in a government chemical attack on militant strongholds in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar.
Damascus categorically rejected the accusation.
On August 31, US President Barack Obama said he has decided that Washington must take military action against the Syrian government, which would mean a unilateral military strike without a UN mandate. Obama, however, said his administration will first seek authorization from Congress.
All of this comes while the team of UN inspectors, who recently visited Syria to probe the sites of the gas attacks, has yet to release the findings of its inspection.
The UN, Iran, Russia, and China have warned against war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday night that Moscow has its own plans to deal with a possible US military offensive against Syria.
"We have our own ideas about what we would do and how we would do it if the situation develops toward the use of force or otherwise," he said. "We have our plans, but it's too early to talk about them." (Video on the link)

A former member of a city council in the Turkish province of Hatay says that the chemical weapons used in last month’s attack in Syria were transported from Turkey, Press TV reports.
“Four months ago, Turkish security forces found a two-kilogram cylinder with sarin gas after searching the homes of Syrian militants from the al-Qaeda and al-Nusra. They are using our borders to take the gas into Syria,” Mohamad Gunes said.
“The Syrian president has no reason to kill his own people,” he added.
People in the southern province, which borders Syria, said that the weapons were used by the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front militants and not the Syrian government.
“America and Israel had al-Qaeda use chemical weapons in order to push us into war; none of us wants war here. In the history of Hatay, we all lived peacefully side by side, now there is Mossad, CIA and al-Qaeda all over the place. We are worried that they might use chemical weapons against us,” said Farid Mainy, a Hatay resident and an activist.
The residents believe the Turkish government is allowing the transfer of weapons because Ankara is trying to create a pretext in order to wage war on its neighbor.
US President Barack Obama is trying to convince the Congress to approve a military strike against Syria over the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government.
Washington says it has obtained evidence proving that the Syrian army was behind the chemical attack near Damascus on August 21, which killed hundreds of Syrians.
The Syrian government has repeatedly said that the deadly attack was carried out by militants operating inside the country in a bid to draw in a foreign military intervention.
Obama has delayed military action pending Congressional approval at a vote scheduled for September 9.
On Monday, Russia dismissed as “absolutely unconvincing” the evidence presented by the US accusing the Syrian government of the gas attack.
“When you ask for more detailed proof, they say all of this is classified so we cannot show this to you,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that the number of Syrian refugees, who have fled the country’s 29-month-long conflict, reached two million.
“Syria is hemorrhaging women, children and men who cross borders often with little more than the clothes on their backs,” the UNHCR said.
The UN refugee agency also said that some 4.2 million people have also been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict in the Arab country. (Video on the link)

The Assad Chemical Attack" story of Damascus, Syria, is a proven fake. The so-called 'evidence' acquired by the U.N., will probably never be seen, as it has been deemed "Top Secret." (I think you can see why.) All other available evidence, presented here, indicates that at the very most, Jihadist mercenary infiltrators (called "rebels" by the treasonous media) may have been playing with chemicals given to them by the Saudis, or stolen from a civilian chlorine plant, and had an accident. Rather than admit what they had done, these terrorist mercenaries seized upon the opportunity to blame the accident on Assad. They STAGED fake victims, as they have done many times before in their fake "rebellion" against Assad. (See "Meet the 'Crisis Actors' of the Syria-'FSA'" for ample proof of this.)
All available evidence indicates that the "chemical weapons" attack in Damascus, Syria, is a manufactured fake, like the Boston marathon bombing. |
What is even more shocking, it appears that these two events are linked. Both are also bear incriminating connections to John Kerry (AKA John "Kohn").
In 1965, John Kerry, Jewish son of a wealthy Wall Street family, the Kohns of New York and Boston, was "tapped" (i.e. chosen) for big things. Kerry was one of only 15 elite young men, all seniors at Yale University, initiated into the satanic secret society, Order of Skull & Bones.
Kerry is also a promoter of a New World Order and for surrendering U.S. sovereignty to the U.N. and other international organizations.

Former US congressman Ron Paul says the United States is planning to strike Syria because Damascus is the doorstep for entering Iran.
“The whole theory is we’re going to Syria because that’s the way you march into Iran,” Paul said in an interview with CNN on Tuesday.
“At the same time, we’ve made it tougher... We’ve made it tougher for people who want to live in peace… and now we’re just stirring it up in Syria,” he argued.
US President Barack Obama, who is waiting for congressional authorization to attack Syria, won critical support from key congressional leaders on Tuesday to launch military strikes against Syria.
Following a meeting with Obama, House Speaker John Boehner said the US has "enemies around the world that need to understand that we're not going to tolerate this type of behavior. We also have allies around the world and allies in the region who also need to know that America will be there and stand up when it's necessary."
Ron Paul also criticized the Obama administration for interfering in the internal affairs of Syria.
“It's a civil war and there's no way you're going to figure it out. I smell Iraq all over again. I remember the assurances that were given us 10 years ago and members of Congress believed that. But let me tell you, the situation is a lot different. The American people are on my side on this issue today and there's a lot more people in Congress now who are saying, it makes no sense,” he said.
“And just listen to the military commanders. They said, you know, we don't even have the money for this. We have to have a supplemental. Now, how about all these warmongers getting ready to bomb and kill and invade or do whatever they think necessary and they don't even have the money and then they have to appropriate the money, which means more money drained from our economy,” Paul argued.
Paul also experienced “technical difficulties” with his satellite connection during his interview with CNN.
Meanwhile, recent polls show the American people are against Syria war under the pretext of the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government.
An ABC News/Washington Post poll released Tuesday said 59 percent of Americans oppose unilateral US military action. Pew Research also found that opponents of a strike outnumber supporters, 48 percent to 29 percent.

This post appeared on MJ Rosenberg’s site today: Exclusive: House staffer tells me what AIPAC is doing.
The media today is full of stories about AIPAC and its decision to push for a “yes” vote on Syria to ensure that President Obama initiates the war it really wants, with Iran. Check out this Washington Post story.
There is simply no way AIPAC and its camp followers would do this for Syria. Israel has no problem with the Assad regime. Like their dearly departed fellow former strongman Hosni Mubarak, both Hafez and Bashir Assad scrupulously kept the peace with Israel since 1973. As for chemical weapons, Israel not only has used them in Gaza but is one of seven countries in the world (Syria is another one) that has not ratified the treaty banning their use. Additionally, any regime likely to succeed Assad’s is likely to be more militantly anti-Israel and more trigger happy than the current regime.
The reason Israel (and its lobby) are going all out to push the United States to attack Syria is as a precedent for a much larger attack on Iran. As AIPAC admits in its own statement of support for the Syria attack:
This is a critical moment when America must also send a forceful message of resolve to Iran and Hezbollah — both of whom have provided direct and extensive military support to Assad. The Syrian regime and its Iranian ally have repeatedly demonstrated that they will not respect civilized norms. That is why America must act, and why we must prevent further proliferation of unconventional weapons in this region.
America’s allies and adversaries are closely watching the outcome of this momentous vote. This critical decision comes at a time when Iran is racing toward obtaining nuclear capability. Failure to approve this resolution would weaken our country’s credibility to prevent the use and proliferation of unconventional weapons and thereby greatly endanger our country’s security and interests and those of our regional allies.
To put it simply, AIPAC fears that if it if lets President Obama go wobbly on Syria, it is impossible to imagine that he would undertake a war with Iran that could ignite the entire Middle East and lead to the commitment of U.S. troops in a third major Middle Eastern war in a little over a decade.
And that is why AIPAC and its satellites are turning the screws on Congress, especially on progressive and liberal Democrats who tend to be antiwar except when AIPAC comes knocking. (Republicans are more immune to AIPAC because they do not rely on AIPAC-directed campaign dollars given that they have so many other sources. Besides they tend to be hawks on their own, without pressure).
So what does AIPAC pressure feel like? How does it work?
I called a friend who is a foreign policy aide to a House member and, after I promised not to identify him in any form, he told me this.
First come the phone calls from constituents who are AIPAC members. They know the Congressman and are nice and friendly and just tell him, or whichever staffer the constituent knows, just how important this vote is to him and his friends back in the district.
Then the donors call. The folks who have hosted fundraisers. They are usually not only from the district but from New York or LA or Chicago. They repeat the message: this vote is very important.
Contrary to what you might expect, they do not mention campaign money. They don’t have to. Because these callers are people who only know the Congressman through their checks, the threat not to write any more of them is implicit. Like the constituents, the donors are using AIPAC talking points which are simple and forceful. You can argue with them but they keep going back to the script. Did I mention the rabbis? We only have a few in our district but we get calls from all of them and from other rabbis from around the state.
Then there are the AIPAC lobbyists, the professional staffers. They come in, with or without appointments. If the Congressman is in, they expect to see him immediately. If not, they will see a staffer. If they don’t like what they hear, they will keep coming back. They are very aggressive, no other lobby comes close, They expect to see the Member, not mere staff.
Then there are the emails driven by the AIPAC website, the editorials in the one Jewish newspaper we have in our state. And then the “Dear Colleague” letters from Jewish House members saying how important the vote is for Israel and America. They also will buttonhole the Members on the House floor. Because my boss is not Jewish, he tends to defer to his Jewish colleagues. It is like they are the experts on this. And, truth be told, all the senior Jewish Members of the House are tight with AIPAC. Also, the two biggest AIPAC enforcers, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and his Democatic counterpart, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, are fierce AIPAC partisans, and they make sure to seek out Members on the floor to tell them how they must vote. On anything related to Israel, they speak in one voice: AIPAC’s.
My friend concluded:
Obviously, there is no counterpart to this on the antiwar side. No anti-AIPAC to speak of. AIPAC owns this issue. It gets what it wants. It will get this and, sad to say, my boss, who hates the idea of using more war as a means to end war, will probably vote “yes.” He says he will never support an attack on Iran but, when the time comes, this Syria push will look like nothing. Syria is just a tactic for AIPAC. But its #1 goal, at least from the vantage point of Capitol Hill, is war with Iran.
Yeah, it’s scary.

Yeah, it’s scary.
The Senate panel acted after top administration officials pressed their case Wednesday for congressional approval of a U.S. military strike, even if lawmakers would support only a more limited authorization than the administration originally wanted.
In a news conference in Stockholm, the first leg of a trip that will take him to Russia for a Group of 20 summit, Obama made the case for a U.S. strike on Syria “limited in time and in scope” to degrade Assad’s military capabilities and deter him from resorting to chemical weapons again in his brutal war, now in its third year, against rebels seeking his ouster.
“I didn’t set a red line,” Obama said in response to a question. “The world set a red line” when it declared chemical weapons “abhorrent” and passed a treaty forbidding them. “Congress set a red line when it ratified that treaty.”
After classified, closed-doors hearings Wednesday morning on Capitol Hill, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee began debating a new draft of a resolution on the use of force in Syria in response to a reported chemical weapons attack last month that killed more than 1,400 people.
But the hearing to mark up the resolution was delayed for more than two hours amid disagreements among senators over its wording. Among those initially opposed to the Senate committee’s draft was Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a leading GOP voice on national security issues, who wanted broader U.S. action against Syria, the Associated Press reported.
The Senate committee’s version, released late Tuesday by a bipartisan group of senators, would permit up to 90 days of military action against the Syrian government and bar the deployment of U.S. combat troops in Syria, while allowing a small rescue mission in the event of an emergency. The White House also would be required within 30 days of enactment of the resolution to send lawmakers a plan for a diplomatic solution to end the violence in Syria.
Opening a hearing Wednesday afternoon to consider amendments to the resolution, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, said it was “tightly tailored” to give the president the necessary authority but “does not authorize” the use of U.S. ground troops in Syria. The committee subsequently rejected, by a 14-4 vote, an amendment from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) that would have imposed further restrictions by invoking provisions of the 1973 War Powers Resolution.

A top Russian defense official has warned the Israeli regime against “playing with arms and missiles” in a volatile region after it admitted to firing ballistic projectiles in the Mediterranean Sea without a prior warning.
Underscoring the current volatility of the Mediterranean and the massive arms build-up in the region, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov told journalists on Tuesday “I don’t completely understand how someone could play with arms and missiles in that region today.”
Although the Russian official did not mention the Zionist regime by name, his remarks came hours after Israeli officials admitted to firing “ballistic targets” that resembled missiles in the growingly tense region, RIA Novosti reported on
Wednesday.
“The Mediterranean is a powder keg,” Antonov emphasized. “A match is enough for fire to break out and possibly spread not only to neighboring states but to other world regions as well. I remind you that the Mediterranean is close to the borders of the Russian Federation.”
He further recalled that a meteorological rocket launch by Norway in 1995 was mistaken as a possible rocket attack against Russia.
The Russian then called on “those who launched the so-called missile-like targets” to be more responsible for regional security and “not play with fire,” according to the report.
After the Russian military detected the firing of two ballistic projectiles on Tuesday, the Israeli military announced that it launched the missiles as part of a joint effort with the US to “test” its missile defense system.
Russia, meanwhile, placed its General Staff’s Central Command Center on high alert following the two Israeli launches, the report noted, citing remarks by Antonov.
According to a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Russia detected the missile launch by radar at 10:16 a.m. Moscow time (6:16 a.m. GMT) in the southern Russian city of Armavir.
This is while Israeli military officials claimed in a statement that the first test of the latest version of the so-called Sparrow target missile had been successful, with the missile following its planned trajectory toward the Israeli coast and the Arrow radar system detecting and tracking its path.
However, a military spokeswoman for the regime, Myriam Nahon, declined to address questions on whether the test had been connected to the current state of affairs in Syria, saying only that such tests are “conducted periodically,” and “it happens whenever it has to happen.”
In Washington meanwhile, the Pentagon further issued a statement, admitting to its role in providing technical assistance and support to the Zionist regime for the so-called Sparrow test launch.
The development comes as US President Barack Obama has vowed to wage unilateral military action against the Syrian nation without a UN mandate, citing its accusation, based on “classified information,” that the Syrian government was behind a recent chemical attack in the nation.
Damascus, however, has fiercely denied the allegation, insisting that the foreign-backed militants in the country launched the chemical attack.

Two Palestinians were killed during clashes in Syria on Wednesday, a local Palestinian group said.
The Workforce for Palestinians in Syria said in a statement that Omar Abbas and Adnan Qasem were killed after shelling in Yarmouk camp near Damascus.
The group said that a Palestinian woman from al-Aedin camp died Wednesday after suffering a heart attack while on a boat fleeing to Italy.
Another woman, Salma Mahmoud, died after arriving in Italy following a tortuous journey escaping Syria, the group added.
The al-Sheikh refugee camp came under heavy shelling, while refugees in the al-Sbineh camp are suffering from a lack of food, medicine, and fuel due to a blockade by the Syrian army.
A Palestinian refugee was killed on Monday in Syria's Daraa refugee camp.
The group said that Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus witnessed clashes between Syrian regime forces and rebels and has been blockaded by Syria's army for over 50 days, with no electricity or medical supplies.
In March, the Action Group for Palestinians of Syria said that over 1,377 Palestinians had been killed in the ongoing Syria conflict, with that number thought to have increased significantly since then.
More than two million Syrians have now fled their war-ravaged country, the UN refugee agency said Tuesday.
A staggering 6.2 million Syrians have been torn from their homes -- a number without parallel in any other country and representing nearly a third of Syria's pre-war population of 20.8 million.
